I painted up a brown marbled cow leather bomber style jacket for a friend of mine as a thank you.

The symbolism was not lost on him.

It looks much better IRL than in the pictures. But meh, what can you do. Perhaps he'll let me take pictures of him in it at a later point.

Arty Things 4

Yet another posting of arty things I have found on the internet. I doubt anyone will actually make it all the way through these but, in my opinion, they're well worth it. Anyone who goes gets a cookie. Or a muffin. In any case, Enjoy!

PB&J Sushi
-These remind me of the 'fancy sandwiches' my grandma used to make. Hers had maraschino cherries and cream cheese, or tuna and cucumber. But why not Peanut butter and Jam?

Then and Now
-A photo of what I think is a park in the seventies to what it looks like now, forty years later.

Cotton Monsters
-Strange and adorable plushie monsters made from old recycled clothing. Checking out her studio work is well worth it. My favourites are the pink mass of eyes and tentacles and the wearable monsters.

Scribbler
-I used to do this in Junior high, draw a line and then keep scribbling until it looks like there are a million little spiderwebs over everything. The more lines you draw, the longer the animation goes for. Good for killing some time.

Love by Pablo Neruda
-Neruda is one of my favourite poets. He writes mostly melancholy love poems and I've only read the English translations, but they're still beautiful. This isn't my favourite poem of his but it comes close. Any chance I'll get, I'll toss something of his in.

Recycled Chipmunk
-A quick tutorial on how to make a chipmunk/squirrel plush out of those old dollar store gloves. I'm kind of amused by plashes made from recycled stuff.

Leonid Afremov
- I'm a big fan of colour and visible brush strokes in paintings and this guy has both. This painting is long since sold and I can't remember the name of it but I still think it's worth a look. I'm particularly fond of the water/sky blur.

Vintage Tattoos
-Tattoos have been around for a very, very long time. They're an ingrained part of our culture in every era. But I think this images of vintage tattooing will surprise you.

Street Crimes by Banksy
-I love graffiti. I love the brashness, disrespectful, temporary quality of it. I'm a particular fan of this person.

He’s gone from a teenage tagger to a well-known artist making multi-million dollar art. His style and message have, ironically, been wholeheartedly embraced by the very type of people he mocks."

-I came across this guy's work on dA a long time ago and became a fan of this warped but realistic style of painting.

In Search of Missing Pieces by Bruno Catalano
-A series of sculptures all based on the same idea of absent but filled space.

Steampunk Sculptures
-This one is for a friend who both loves and hates Steampunk. I, on the other hand, adore tiny leather and steam robots. I also feel these have a very 'Tim Burton-esque' style to them.

The Last Answer
-I can either say a lot about this one or let it stand on it's own. As it is, I think it's better if you come to it only knowing it's a story about what happens after we die and that's only scratching the surface. If you like irony, this is a good read for you.

-If you didn't like the one above, here's another idea of the world that is the great beyond. A little more 'hopeful' this one is.

Macro Ant
-I've heard a lot of discussions whether photography is an art form or if it's simply what is before the lens that is the art and the camera an instrument of capture that cheapens the moment. In any case, this is a super amazing picture that is worth taking a look at.

Invade a Hospital
-Posters like these get grouped into the 'brash graffiti' category. I like it when people point out contradictory opinions.

Tom Otterness
-This guy specializes in large public sculptures, such as playgrounds and his squishy human form creatures. It's worth a look through his gallery and his explanation of his process.

Beanie with a Beard
-This is one way to keep your face warm during the winter. And who says knitting is a dying art?

I do not love you by Pablo Neruda
-Fine, I caved. This is my absolute favourite Neruda poem. Absolute favourite. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Pin-up art that kicks you in the teeth
-Ha. Thought you were getting away with a posting from me that didn't include pin-up art? Think again!

Hyperrealistic Sculptures
-Carole Feuerman creates sculptures that look as intensely real as she can get them. Things like this always creep me out but I figured I'd share anyways. Also, not sure why all the women she sculpts are wet...

-When I was younger, I could have sworn I had a book of fairytales illustrated in this style. And this is a style I love to death. I'd love to do an old classic fairytale play (ie. Beauty and the Beast) with throwbacks to this sort of colour and movement.

-Places like these make me itch for a camera and some bizarre costumes to put on my models and to go traipsing about the creepy location, taking equally creepy pictures. Too bad there's nothing this awesome around here.

Modern Living - Neurotic Series
-This collections of animations had me intrigued, amused and playing with it for hours. I love the stark 'noir' feel and the passively aggressive nature in which the viewer interacts with the animations. I also really like the feeling of being confused but desiring to know more.
Just check it out. You'll understand what I mean.

-There are some people who keep 'journals' which house a growing collection of their artwork. When I find people who have uploaded them, I spend hours paging though the little secret peek into their art world. I'm jealous of people who have a commitment to fill a book like that and I'm super jealous of the abilities they have to do so in an eye-pleasing manner.

"EVOL is a berlin based street artist that transforms banal urban surfaces, into miniature architectural surfaces through pasting. using pasted paper, EVOL transforms electric boxes, small planters and other geometric city forms, into miniature apartment buildings and other structures. each piece of paper is printed with a repetitive pattern of flat gray walls dotted with plain window frames. once applied to a surface, the paper transforms the form into small building that EVOL often adorns with small characters. Well, school's been kicking my ass lately and I haven't really had any time for art.

So, I figured, instead of just using this blog for my art, I'd use it to show other people some of the really cool stuff I find on the internet. Because a lot of my time on the internet is spent looking at other people's art. I'm hoping to update this frequently between my projects.

Jackson Pollock - This is fun and it makes a really pretty picture. Move the mouse and/or click to start. Play around. You're an artist!

Make a Face - This is a fantastic idea! I love how he take actors, gives them a scene and then snaps their facial expressions. I think I want to recreate this with my friends.

Everyday Objects - I love things made out of ordinary house hold items. With some wire, creativity and dramatic lighting, these photographs are epic.

Awesome Artwork Made with Sharpies - I love Sharpies! Love them. I am constantly buying new colors and doodling with them. These people have taken the 'writes on anything' idea to a whole new level.

-This is just really cool. Take a look.

-Really cool drawings that blend from realism to fantasy. I really enjoyed looking at these and marvelling at the pencil technique.

Mirror Man

-That isn't a sculpture. This man made a suit out of glass. For those who saw recent Performance Creation piece I was in, Coming Fragmented, wouldn't the disco-ball head have been crazy done with something like this instead?

Rainbow Book

-This is brilliant! Everyone always looks down at flip books, watching as they move in a 2D world. The idea of taking a flip book and making it 3D is so simple but so unique.

-This one is fun until you realize it looks like you're up in a tree looking down at a man who had hung himself and every time you move, he sways. *shiver*

A mouse click will make it amusing again!

Dante's Scroll

-I get to the bottom of this and all I can think is "I cannot believe that is sand."

The detail in this sand sculpture is amazing, made all the more impressive by the fact that any attempts to move or touch this thing would have it crumble away.

Metallica Band Tee

I know this isn't a 'custom' item but I figured I'd leave a note here to draw some attention to it.

I'm selling a Rare and REAL Vintage Metallica Band/Concert Tee Shirt from the US Summer '94 Tour, "No where Else to Roam." Yes, real. It's got the (c) symbols and proper printed dates and everything!

This shirt is in absolutely PERFECT condition. I don't even think it's been worn. There isn't a single hole on it. No fading. You will NEVER find this shirt in such good condition anywhere else. ALL of the other ones on Ebay have tiny holes, fading and other wear 'n' tear. This shirt is perfect. There is NOTHING wrong with it.

This shirt is rare, real vintage and a MUST HAVE for ANY Metallica lover/collector. I'm serious when I say 'frame worthy.'

Lausanne's RENT shoes

Custom Shoes for Lausy. She requested these a LONG time ago

It's Gordon and Roger from Jonathan Larson's Rent. She's probably the ONLY person in the world who puts those two together. In case you don't know, Gordon is the one who has the 'I'm a New Yorker. Fear is my life." spiel. He also, in the stage version, has the "Will I" solo.

On the shoes, Gordon is balling up paper (thought of, by me, to be musical paper or whatever it is you call the stuff you write music on) and tossing it at Roger. Roger sighs but puts up with his silly Gordon.

On the sides are the lyrics 'Give in to love/Or Live in Fear" with the appropriate parts from the score on the inside side. (If that makes any sense.)

The heel has a rainbow.

Sketched on in pencil and then inked with a black fabric marker. Lines then erased and canvas cleaned up as best I could

Then colored with my brand new Prismacolor markers! After that, a layer of glaze was applied to the whole thing. :D

This type of shoe would go for $60 CND.

Jackets for Customization!

A jacket I just recently got. It's avaliable for cutomization. It's a vintage leather motorcycle jacket from late 80s, early 90s (sad that I can now say that early 90s is vintage. :p)
It's beautifully worn in, very soft. It has that 'antiqued' look, with spots of wear that don't really damage the jacket at all. Made of great leather with no tears or rips and it was definately made in Canada. It's a men's size 46, making it a fairly large jacket. Definately for larger shoulders.
Only downside is it smells a bit musty, probably from being stored in an attic somewhere. Nothing a bit of airing can't fix.In short, it's a BEAUTIFUL jacket. And it's for sale with personal cutomization.
[Just as a little heads up, If this item is not purchased for personal customization within a month, I will be painting it with my own design and selling it like that.]

And then I have this one!

This is indeed another motorcyle style jacket, but this one is in absolutely goregous black suede. Yes, suede. And very soft, touchable suede at that. No rips or tears or patches of wear. The only place you can tell it's been worn is that the label is slightly worn away.

It has a belt and large strong zippers. No size tag on this one but it is also fairly large. The sleeves are very long but the body is fairly fitted. I'd suggest this jacket for someone a little taller. I'll have measurements soon. This is for sale and can be painted upon!

Julia's lovebird Shoes

These shoes were commissioned by Julia. They are two lovebirds sitting on their own half of a full heart. They are plain white canvas shoes that have been painted with acrylics and sealed with glaze.
The bird on the left was painted to represent "Julia," with her brown hair and like of yellows and greens. The bird on the right is painted to represent her boyfriend, who has black hair and who basically doesn't wear anything but blue, black and grey.

For these shoes, like most everything I do, I started with a sketch.
Granted, the sketch didn't have the break in it that the shoes did, but I still think it transfered on just fine and the point still gets across. In the sketch, though, the birds both had very 'female' looking eyes. For the boy bird, I took out the 'lashes' and just gave him a solid, straight eyeline.

After printing out the sketch, I traced the image in chalk and transfered it onto the shoe. After that, I made the lines stronger with pencil and added all the details back in, like eyes and feet.
After that, I inked the design with a black fabric marker. Then the painting starts.
Julia requested very simple shoes, with no texturing or background colors, just the birds on the toes. So, I start with the lightest feather color and worked my way up, building layers as I go. Then, I added in highlights and any additions that were needed. Once everything dries, I paint over the image with a clear glaze. This seals the paint and makes the image slightly shinny.

Theses shoes were done in about a day and a half, are a size seven wide and sold for $40.00

Silver Snake Vest

This used to be a leather jacket identical to Maureen's jacket. However, when used it in Summerstock's RENT, I pulled the sleeves off of it and re-sewed the edge back down. For the show, it had been hand distressed. The buttons had been scratched and dirtied, spots on the jacket had been roughed up and the whole thing had been splattered with white paint. It was wore by one of the criminals that beat up Collins.
The rest of the additions happened after show.

The snake is a tribute to my own snake, who died from an illness two days ago. It was drawn on in bright metallic silver and twists from the back left to the front right, with the tail curling from the back right to front left. The pocket flap has been painted over with a scale pattern and the 'shatter' marks are also white paint.

Maureen's Jacket

While designing and constructing costumes Summerstock's RENT, I recieved a couple of leather motorcycle jackets I used in the show. With this one, I covered the front lapels, pocket flap, collar and cuff hems in cone studs. And I did all the studs by hand with a hammer. Ugh, my fingers!
The two zippers and the pocket flap all have short chain peices hanging from them. The right shoulder had four shinny chains curved from back to front and held together at the front with a silver lock. Both shoulders had a row of six two inch spikes to add to it's theatricality and to draw attention to the shoulders.
The most impressive part of this jacket, which also took the longest, was the wings that spaned the whole back. They were done completely in safety pins! This was, again, murder on my fingers. Later on, each safety pin was pinched closed to prevent them from falling off, as they often did during the run of the show.

This jacket was sold to Keirstyn, the girl who played Maureen in the show. The wings and studding can be recreated on any other jacket. I can also create other images with safety pins, such as sparrows, feathers, etc. Email me for more info or to commission me.

Kira's Custom Clothing!

I've decided to start a blog, like Julia has suggested, to display and keep track of my commissions and custom clothing. It definately is more acessible then facebook.

Well, this idea for custom clothing came from the work I did while part of Summerstock's RENT. After sitting down with Dean, designing and then painting his jacket for Roger, I was informed that I apparently had a 'talent' for this kind of work.

I was also encouraged and approached by other to continue this kind of work and to move on from jackets to shoes, bags, pants and t-shirts. And then from networking on facebook to getting my own blog. Perhaps if this keeps up, I shall eventually get my own website. Hmm...

In any case, here I will be displaying my commissioned projects and items I have customized myself. If the item is for sale, it will be posted beneath the picture. Some of the stuff I make can be recreated, unless requested by the commissioner to be 'one-of-a-kind," but I really do specialize in creating images and custom clothing originally for each person. I can even customize your own personal clothing, instead of a pre-bought items of my own.
